THE FAG HAGS ARE COMING OUT OF THE CLOSET...


Oz Fag Hags was founded in January 2008 by Janet Starr. The original website was created for the purpose of a PhD that Janet is writing on the “Fag Hag” identity. Through Janet’s research she discovered that people didn't know, or knew little about, what a Fag Hag was!

One of Janet's ultimate dreams was to be involved in a Mardi Gras Parade as a Fag Hag. With 2008 being the 30th Anniversary of “Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras”, Janet had no doubts that it was the perfect year to fulfil her dream. (“I believe we are the first ever Fag Hag float to be entered in the parade”. – Janet Starr)

With the theory in place Janet contacted her long time friend Kelly Thistlewaite. Kelly loved the idea and thought it would be a great opportunity for all the other Fag Hags out there to get involved in something that would be productive and supportive towards the gay community.

With little time to spare, Kelly started a Facebook group called Oz Fag Hags along with an invitation to the Oz Fag Hag Float for Mardi Gras. Once the word got out Oz Fag Hags grew its own wings and took off. With an overwhelming response from both fags and their hags the “Oz Fag Hags” float was bound to set sail.

On the 1st March 2008, Oz Fag Hags made their first appearance in the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras 2008.
